The EMN meeting began in 2008 as a small workshop held at a traditional villa in Orland, Florida. Since then we have organized five successful workshops under the theme of Energy, Materials and Nanotechnology. The EMN Conference series have grown beyond the traditional villa setting and have had continued success in 2009 (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands), 2010 (Santorini, Greece), 2011 (Las Vegas, Nevada) and 2012 (Orlando, Florida).
At the very beginning, the EMN conferences were joint with virtual ones to encourage open-access to conference contents. By open-access, we refer to free availability on the Internet, permitting any user to access the conference presentations, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without financial, legal, or technical impediments. The only constraint on reproduction and distribution, and the only role for copyright in this domain, should be to give conference attendees control over the integrity of their work and the right to be properly acknowledged and cited.
To continue this open tradition, the EMN conferences now have their new version, EMN Open Access Week, as a globe event under the International Open Access Week (http://www.openaccessweek.org/). A typical face-to-face conference will take place from October 22-26, 2013 at Chengdu, China. Beyond the well-prepared topical sessions, there will be a range of other exciting opportunities for visiting participants to get out and explore Chengdu, the vibrant, dynamic and accessible city.
Together with its face-to-face counterpart will be a joint virtual conference run in real-time, providing an advanced collaborative environment for participants from every corner of the world to share their knowledge while carrying on their regular scholarly duties and without the expense of physically traveling to Chengdu. By using the computers in their offices or homes, through the Internet EMN participants will be able to present their research on thousands of screens along with their oral presentations as they become part of the face-to-face conference in Chengdu and the whole world.
We look forwards to your contribution to this experiment in a new form of conference.
